Illia Makarov (18 yo) – winner of the Made in Slavutych record contest. Student of the Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University. Before university he has lived in Slavutych from the age of five. He tell about his dream: “When I am old and look back at my life, I will smile to the feeling that I haven’t lived my life for nothing, and I will be happy”.
Although there are a lot of problems on all levels in our country, it’s people who make it better, because they can make any problem into a joke and laugh about it. And if such problems make people’s lives very difficult, they will not remain silent, they will solve the problems together.
Do you think the older and the younger generations differ from each other in Ukraine?
Yes, in terms of principles of bringing up. It has to deal with what country those generations were brought up most of all. I can already see some progress in the mentality of the young, and the progress cannot be stopped.
What do you like in Slavutych and what would you change?
I’ve spent my childhood years in Slavutych and I like that it offers a lot of possibilities for children’s development – sports, art, music, self-government. All that is available in the town. What I would change is the vector of the town’s development – a new idea of it development should be created that is not related to Chornobyl nuclear power station.
If you could make something in the town disappear, what would it be?
The only thing that disturbs me is the problems of development that appeared “thanks” to not very good management and a conflict of interests in the executive branch of the municipality.
If you had to live in a country other than Ukraine, which country would it be? Why? Give us some examples.
I love my country, that’s why it is a difficult question to answer, but I guess I would choose the Far East countries. People who live there are unique, they are not affected by the globalisation problems and I find that wonderful.
How do you see Slavutych in 2050?
There are two ways here. The first one is pessimistic, related to the closure of “Novarka” confinement, because of which the town is doomed to slow decline. Unfortunately, there are a few examples of such cities in the post-Soviet area. The second one is optimistic, I see my town as a symbol of the green sector of the economy, be it tourism or energy sector. It might be a trend in 2050.
What was your motivation for participation in the record contest for Slavutych that should get its place among Guinness World Records?
Nowadays, our town is mentioned for two reasons: concerning Chornobyl nuclear power station or some negative events. I would like our town to be talked about for the least negative reason – the cultural one.
Please, describe what record you suggest and how it could improve the town.
My record is that we should engage as many people as possible in making a short film, regardless of whether they are actors or directors or something else. In that way we would make the largest scale short film.
What do you think of your prize – a trip to Czech Republic? Have you been there before? What would you like to see during your trip? What are you waiting for most?
I have been to Czech Republic once, but I was only 5 at that time. That’s why I am very excited about this trip. I am a fan of traveling, visiting new places is pure pleasure for me.
I want to see how people live in Czech Republic, see their traditions, architecture etc. I am waiting for relaxation and enjoying the trip.
